BRALETTES, BRATZ AND TWEENS - INSIGHT 17 APRIL 2007
and not yet teenagers, tweens –those aged six to eleven - have become a lucrative consumer base worth $4 billion to marketeers in Australia.

While we all know that sex sells, experts are concerned this is now being used to get kids to part with their pocket money.

Doctors are worried that products like the Bratz dolls, child-size bras and raunchy lyrics from tween idols like the Pussy Cat dolls are sexualising our pre-pubescent young ones at an earlier age.

Health professionals are warning there are real risks attached to this phenomenon, such as early sexual behaviour, body dissatisfaction, anxiety and eating disorders.

At the same time, others are wondering what all the fuss is about? Weren't Madonna and Barbie once controversial? Haven’t kids always liked playing dress ups? Or is there a real danger that kids are being exposed to sex too soon?

Join Jenny Brockie as she speaks with parents, tweens, doctors, the child modelling and advertising industry to find out whether we’re in the midst of a moral panic or if there is in fact cause for concern.

“BRAS, BRATZ AND TWEENS” will be broadcast on TUESDAY APRIL 17TH at 7.30pm on SBS. REPEAT FRIDAY 1:30PM AND MONDAY 2:30PM.
