Remembering a homeless man named Patrick, Eureka Street, Vol. 17 No. 15

09 August, 2007

Eureka Street has been very generous to me this year.

Their evolution to an online journal has not impacted on the quality of the writing or ideas, in fact its contribution to public debate continues to be high. Their generosity is in the publication of my reflections.

I have always seen my writing style as lending itself to a traditional essayist style. A style that has diminished in terms of contemporary publication. I recall reading a collection of Charmaine Clift's works when I was at Uni and being so inspired to write and reflect as she did.

The provocative columnist has however replaced most of the reflective essayists. Still, the editors of Eureka Street have indulged me and that makes me glad.

This piece - Remembering a homeless man named Patrick - means a lot in so many ways. It reminded me of an early morning adventure I once had that I'd almost forgotten, and it reminded me how much I had loved performing and recording spoken word pieces that was so much a part of my writing world before I had children.

I have re-recorded a piece called Patrick Little. It is also published in this issue of Eureka Street.
